How long is the service life of laminar flow hoods and FFUs?

FFU vs A-Class Cleanroom Hood: Complete Lifespan Comparison of the Entire Unit + Accessories
I. Design Lifespan of the Entire Unit (Industry standard conditions, pharmaceutical / electronic cleanrooms, daily operation of 8-16 hours)
1. FFU (Fan Filter Unit, galvanized / stainless steel simple housing)
1) EC DC Brushless FFU (High-end GMP model)
Fan design lifespan: 8-10,000 hours, conversion:
8 hours/day: 12-15 years
24-hour continuous operation: 9-11 years
Overall lifespan of the unit: 8-10 years. After motor aging, the fan can be replaced separately, and the housing can be reused.
2) AC AC FFU (General economy model)
Fan lifespan: 3-5,000 hours. The entire unit only lasts 5-7 years. Later, noise and air volume decline significantly.
Housing lifespan: Galvanized plate: 10 years or so, prone to rust; 304 stainless steel FFU housing can last over 15 years.
2. A-Class Cleanroom Hood (Fully 304 stainless steel GMP liquid tank sealed model)
Design lifespan of the entire unit: 10-15 years. With proper maintenance, it can last up to 15-20 years.
Advantages: Thickened stainless steel sealed box, noise reduction static pressure chamber, reinforced frame, corrosion and deformation are much less than ceiling FFU; Internal fans and electrical control can be replaced separately, and the box can last for a long time without damage.
Hospitals with high humidity / high disinfection frequency: 10-12 years
Dry low-dust laboratories / electronic workshops: 12-18 years
Summary of the lifespan of the entire unit
A-Class Cleanroom Hood has greater durability than FFU
The stainless steel structure and sealed anti-corrosion design of the cleanroom hood generally have a service life 3-5 years longer than ordinary FFU.
II. Replacement Cycle of Core Wear Parts (Common standards for both fans and filters)
1. Fan (The internal fans of both are completely the same)
EC Brushless Fan: 8-12 years, maintenance-free sealed bearings, no carbon brush wear
AC AC Fan: 5-8 years, bearings prone to abnormal noise, air volume decline
High dust, 24-hour full-load operation will shorten the lifespan by 20%-30%
2. Filter (Consumable, not part of the equipment lifespan)

Silicone sealing strips, PVC barriers, shock-absorbing cotton: 2 – 3 years; they become hard and aged, requiring regular replacement; FFU has no barriers or sealing components, so there is less maintenance consumables.
III. Key differences affecting lifespan
Operating load
FFU is arranged densely on the ceiling, with multiple units operating simultaneously at full load for 24 hours, and the fans are under high static pressure for a long time, resulting in faster aging;
Laminar flow hoods are used independently at each workstation, with the air volume matching the workstation requirements, and the fan load is lower, resulting in less loss.
Environmental corrosion (pharmaceutical disinfection scenarios)
Laminar flow hoods are fully 304 seamless welded, resistant to frequent wiping with hydrogen peroxide and alcohol;
Ordinary galvanized FFU ceilings are prone to rust and peeling after long-term disinfection steam, shortening the lifespan of the entire machine.
Maintenance and repair convenience
Laminar flow hoods have filter pull-out at the bottom and can be inspected on the front of the fan, making regular cleaning and maintenance simple, which can extend the lifespan of the entire machine;
FFU is installed above the ceiling, making maintenance and cleaning difficult, and dust accumulation accelerates motor wear.
IV. Summary of operation cost and lifespan
Short-term within 5 years: Only the filters need to be replaced, and the equipment body has no faults;
5 – 10 years: The AC model FFU starts to replace the fans in batches; the laminar flow hoods only replace the sealing strips and soft curtains, and the fans remain stable;
More than 10 years: Galvanized FFU shells are corroded and eliminated; 304 stainless steel laminar flow hoods only replace the fans and electronic control, and the box can continue to be used.
