Unlike the hot melt adhesive threads adopted by non-separated filters (generally with a long-term temperature resistance not exceeding 120°C), it uses aluminum foil or stainless steel corrugated separators to support the glass fiber filter paper, stably maintaining the pleat spacing. It is not prone to collapse or adhesion under high temperatures, delivering uniform airflow distribution and larger dust holding capacity. Nevertheless, the maximum temperature resistance of the whole filter is not determined solely by the filter media. Instead, it is limited by the component with the lowest temperature resistance among the four parts: filter media, separators, outer frame and sealing adhesive. The sealing adhesive is often the weak point.

Conventional ultra-fine glass fiber filter media boasts favorable thermal stability, with a normal temperature resistance up to approximately 280°C. Aluminum foil separators are recommended for long-term operation below 260°C; they tend to oxidize and deform above this temperature. For higher-temperature working conditions, 304/316 stainless steel separators should be adopted. In terms of outer frames, aluminum profiles and galvanized sheets are available for temperatures below 250°C, while stainless steel frames are mandatory above 250°C to prevent thermal deformation and oxidative peeling. Such material combinations form two mainstream temperature resistance grades in the industry: Grade 1 allows continuous long-term operation at 250～260°C, with a short-time peak temperature up to 280°C; Grade 2 supports continuous long-term service at 350°C, and the short-time impact temperature can reach up to 400°C (generally limited to within 1 hour). Ordinary room-temperature polyurethane sealing adhesive is only suitable for environments below 120°C. It will soften, carbonize and precipitate volatile substances rapidly beyond this temperature, and is completely unsuitable for potting high-temperature separated HEPA filters.

There are two major categories of sealing adhesives matched with high-temperature separated HEPA filters: organic high-temperature RTV silicone (red high-temperature silicone) and inorganic ceramic sealing adhesive. They differ greatly in chemical system, mechanical properties, temperature resistance range and operational risks.

Red organic RTV room-temperature vulcanized silicone is the most widely used potting adhesive for filters of the 260°C grade and the most common sealing system in the cleanroom industry. With a siloxane main chain whose bond energy is far higher than that of ordinary carbon-chain polymers, it features excellent thermal stability. It can withstand continuous long-term temperatures of 250～260°C and short-time thermal shocks up to 280°C. After curing, the silicone retains elasticity and offers favorable deformation compensation capacity, which is its core advantage. During the heating and cooling cycles of the filter, the stainless steel frame, aluminum foil separators and glass fiber filter paper have different thermal expansion coefficients, generating alternating thermal stress. The elastic silicone can absorb the displacement caused by thermal expansion and contraction, so it is not easy to crack and becomes more reliable under repeated cold and hot cycles. It is suitable for intermittently started ovens and production lines with periodic temperature rise and fall.

Meanwhile, qualified purification-grade high-temperature silicone undergoes degassing treatment with low precipitation and low volatility, achieving good AMC control. It is compatible with pharmaceutical depyrogenation, food and precision electronics clean environments. After curing, it forms stable adhesion to glass fiber filter paper and metal frames, and the potting forms a continuous adhesive layer with a high pass rate of PAO leak testing. However, it also has obvious drawbacks: when operated continuously above 260°C for a long time, the silicone will gradually powder, harden and lose elasticity, leading to peeling at the bonding interface and hidden leakage points. Besides, silicone has limited bonding strength and is only used for sealing rather than structural bonding. Before putting silicone filters into service, it is recommended to carry out stepped heating baking and curing to gradually remove small molecules inside the adhesive and avoid adhesive layer bubbling and interface debonding caused by sudden direct heating.

Inorganic ceramic sealing adhesive is applied to ultra-high-temperature separated HEPA filters of the 350°C grade. It is mainly composed of silicate, phosphate and ceramic powder, belonging to an inorganic system without organic polymer main chains. Its high-temperature resistance is far superior to organic silicone. It can run continuously at 350°C for a long time and withstand short-time impact up to 400°C, making it the preferred sealing material for sintering furnaces, high-temperature heat treatment and special chemical tail gas filtration. The inorganic ceramic adhesive will not carbonize or volatilize under high temperatures, with almost no organic precipitation, outstanding aging resistance and flame retardancy.

Nevertheless, the biggest disadvantage of ceramic adhesive is that it is hard and brittle after curing with almost no elasticity, and cannot compensate for deformation induced by thermal expansion and contraction. When the filter is frequently heated and cooled or subjected to temperature shocks, microcracks are very likely to form on the adhesive layer. The cracks will gradually expand and turn into leakage points, which is the primary reason why many 350°C filters fail leak tests frequently under alternating cold and hot working conditions. Ceramic adhesive has strict process requirements and a longer curing cycle. After potting, a strict temperature rising curing procedure is required. Improper control of the curing process tends to leave pores inside and bring hidden leakage risks. Once cracked, it cannot self-recover by elasticity and is difficult to repair. Therefore, filters with ceramic adhesive are preferentially recommended for constant-temperature continuous operation, not for systems with frequent start-stop and large temperature fluctuations.

Apart from these two mainstream adhesive types, a small amount of high-temperature epoxy, phenolic adhesives are used in specific scenarios. High-temperature epoxy adhesives deliver high bonding strength and high hardness, but their maximum temperature resistance is generally 180～200°C. They soften rapidly beyond this temperature and crack easily under thermal shock, so they are rarely used for potting HEPA filters above 250°C. Phenolic adhesives have better temperature resistance than ordinary epoxy, but water vapor will be released during curing, bringing high risks of pores in the adhesive layer and excessive volatile substances. They are seldom adopted in purification and cleanroom fields.

In engineering selection and daily operation, the principle of “temperature matching + working condition matching” should be followed, instead of only referring to the nominal temperature resistance value. For constant-temperature continuous operation above 300°C, ceramic adhesive plus stainless steel separators and stainless steel outer frames are preferred. For intermittent ovens with frequent start-stop and cold-hot cycles within 250°C, elastic high-temperature silicone is prioritized to reduce the risk of cracking induced by thermal stress. The same filter cannot be used beyond its grade for long periods: silicone-type filters will gradually powder and fail when operated above 280°C for a long time; filters with ceramic adhesive have a significantly higher probability of micro-leakage under large alternating temperature conditions.

Moreover, the quality of high-temperature adhesive directly affects the validation cycle of filters. Low-quality high-temperature adhesive without degassing treatment will release a large amount of organic volatile substances during the first high-temperature baking, contaminating products and resulting in excessive TOC and volatile impurities in GMP validation. Premium special high-temperature adhesive for purification is pre-degassed before delivery with controllable volatiles, suitable for high-grade clean processes. During acceptance and maintenance, in addition to conventional air velocity and resistance testing, high-temperature filters must undergo PAO leak testing, focusing on checking the adhesive seam and the junction between filter media and adhesive. After long-term operation, check whether the adhesive layer of silicone filters hardens and powders; for ceramic adhesive filters, inspect the adhesive surface for hairline cracks. Replace the filter promptly once defects are detected to prevent cleanroom cleanliness loss caused by bypass of high-temperature airflow.

In summary, separated HEPA filters are suitable for high-temperature purification thanks to the rigid support of metal separators for filter media, while high-temperature sealing adhesive is the core factor determining sealing reliability and leak test stability. Organic silicone features elasticity and thermal shock resistance, matching alternating high-temperature working conditions within 260°C. Inorganic ceramic adhesive offers extreme temperature resistance and low volatility, suitable for constant-temperature high-temperature scenarios at 350°C. During scheme design, procurement selection and validation acceptance, select the corresponding adhesive system combined with the process temperature curve, start-stop frequency and clean control requirements, so as to balance filtration efficiency, sealing integrity and service life of equipment, and avoid the most common adhesive layer failure and leakage problems in high-temperature working conditions.

In hot air purification systems such as clean ovens, pharmaceutical dry heat depyrogenation, lithium battery sintering, coating curing ovens and semiconductor high-temperature processes, separated HEPA filters serve as the core terminal filtration components for high-temperature sections. Many on-site failures are not caused by filter media breakdown, but by the sealing adhesive aging, embrittlement and debonding under alternating cold and hot conditions or continuous high temperatures, resulting in bypass leakage and direct filter failure. Therefore, understanding the overall temperature resistance limits of separated HEPA filters, the material characteristics of different high-temperature adhesives, as well as the key points for selection and operation, is critical to ensuring stable operation of high-temperature purification systems and meeting PAO leak test and GMP validation requirements.

[92

post-6471","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-technology
["GET
