What are the effects of the glass material of the ultra-clean workstation on its usage?

The comprehensive impact of the glass material of the ultra-clean bench on its usage
The observation window glass of the ultra-clean bench is divided into three types: qualified 5mm tempered glass, ordinary white glass, and acrylic organic glass. The material differences directly affect operational safety, experimental results, equipment lifespan, and GMP compliance. The following will explain the actual usage differences in detail by dimension.
1. Safety aspect (the most critical, concerning personal risks)
1. Qualified tempered glass
Resistance to impact: Experimental equipment, pipettes, centrifuge tubes accidentally colliding will not break easily;
Explosion-proof and cut-resistant: Once broken, it will break into fine, smooth-edged particles, without sharp large pieces of glass that can cause hand injuries;
Temperature stability: UV sterilization heating, indoor cold and hot alternation, will not self-burst.
2. Ordinary non-tempered thin glass (4mm and below)
Minor bumps, sudden temperature changes are likely to cause the entire piece to explode, with sharp edges, easily causing cuts;
During lifting and pushing, the edges are sharp, easy to scratch during daily cleaning and reaching for operations.
3. Acrylic / organic glass (strictly prohibited as a substitute)
Hardness is extremely low, slight impact will cause cracking and chipping, without explosion-proof capability, completely failing to meet laboratory safety standards.
2. Light transmission and impact on experimental observation
Tempered float glass
Uniform light transmission, no color interference, no distortion, clear for observing cells, colonies, and micro-scale operations; long-term UV irradiation will not turn yellow or foggy, and the field of view remains transparent for a long time.
Poor quality ordinary glass
Contains bubbles, waves, and unevenness, viewing samples will be distorted, affecting microscopic observation;
Long-term UV irradiation will gradually turn yellow and turbid, light transmission rate continuously decreases, making it impossible to see the internal operations clearly.
Acrylic sheet
UV lamps long-term irradiation will quickly age and yellow, light transmission significantly decreases, and the surface becomes blurry within a few months.
3. Resistance to disinfection and corrosion (highly required in the laboratory)
Frequent use of 75% alcohol, 84 peracetic acid, peroxide acetate for cleaning and disinfection, and some workshops also need formaldehyde / hydrogen peroxide fumigation:
Tempered glass: Chemical stability is strong, resistant to acids and alkalis, oxidants, repeated wiping will not turn white, corrode, or leave marks, and fumigation can be restored to transparency with clean water.
Ordinary flat glass: Surface hardness is low, long-term erosion by disinfectant solutions will appear haze and white spots, the more you wipe, the more it becomes blurry, and it is permanently blurred.
Acrylic: Alcohol and disinfectant solutions directly corrode the surface, causing yellowing and cracking, slight wiping will produce a large number of scratches, and cannot be repaired; fumigation environment, short-term cracking.
4. Resistance to ultraviolet aging (standard ultraviolet sterilization of the ultra-clean bench)
Before and after each experiment, ultraviolet lamps will be turned on for 30-60 minutes for sterilization:
Tempered glass: Resistant to ultraviolet rays, long-term irradiation will not age, become brittle, or crack;
Ordinary thin glass: Long-term ultraviolet irradiation will cause internal stress, the probability of self-bursting will increase significantly;
Acrylic: Ultraviolet will decompose the sheet, 1-3 months will develop cracks, turn yellow, and the seal will fail, releasing organic volatile substances to contaminate the samples.
5. Wear resistance, service life, and maintenance cost
5mm tempered glass: Surface hardness is high, wiping with a cloth or dust-free paper will not be scratched easily, normal use for 5-8 years will not have obvious wear; rounded corners and polished edges, not easy to accumulate dirt, simple cleaning, in line with the sterile requirements of the clean area.
Ordinary thin glass: Hardness is poor, wiping is likely to be covered with fine scratches, scratches accumulate bacteria, GMP audits will not pass;
1-2 years will become blurry and need to be replaced.
Acrylic: Scratches appear immediately, bacteria are hidden, replacement frequency is extremely high, long-term operation cost is higher.
6. Cleanliness and GMP compliance impact
Compliant tempered glass: Surface is dense and has no pores, does not adsorb microorganisms, edges are smooth without dead corners, disinfection has no residue, fully recognized by pharmaceutical factories and third-party testing institutions during audits;
Poor-quality ordinary glass: Many scratches, prone to fogging, gaps hide bacteria, it is difficult to maintain cleanliness, GMP inspections will determine as defective items. When acrylic ages and cracks, the gaps allow air to leak, disrupting the laminar airflow, causing the hundred-level cleanliness of the workbench to fail directly, and significantly increasing the risk of sample contamination.
VII. Usage Experience of the Elevating Mechanism
The regular tempered glass is polished with rounded corners, allowing smooth sliding and lifting, without burrs;
The ordinary glass has sharp right angles, and during lifting, it is prone to scratching gloves and injuring the arms; the thin plate has poor rigidity, and sliding can easily cause shaking and deformation, and the sealing rubber strip is unevenly stressed, resulting in air leakage.
Summary Comparison Table

Type of glass Safety performance Resistant to disinfection Resistant to ultraviolet rays Light transmission durability

Clean GMP compliance

5mm tempered glass (recommended) Explosion-proof and cut-resistant, safe Alcohol-resistant, 84, fumigation Does not turn yellow or crack over a long period of time. More than 5 years, clear and transparent Completely in accordance with
Ordinary non-tempered thin glass High risk of cracking and cutting injuries Prone to corrosion and forming white haze spots Long-term exposure is prone to explosion. 1 to 2 years of wear and tear causes blurring. Not meeting the auditing requirements
Acrylic organic glass Prone to cracking and crumbling at the edges Alcohol directly causes the skin to turn white. Short-term cracking and peeling of the skin Failed for several months Prohibited for use in sterile laboratories

Practical suggestions:
For cell rooms, microbiology laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and third-party testing laboratories, make sure to identify those with 3C marking and 5mm tempered glass. It is not recommended to purchase any ultra-clean benches made of acrylic or without 3C thin glass. In the future, there will continue to be problems with safety, experiments, and compliance.
